Apra and PPNZ are completely separate stand alone organisations. APRA collects on behalf of the composer and songwriter while PPNZ collects on behalf of the copyright owner of the sound recording commonly known as the record company or producer.
The amount which you may receive is determined by the airplay you receive. The fund is not calculated by each play but by your duration received against other artists registered in the fund. Approximately 19% (as at the 2010 distribution) of all monies collected by PPNZ is then set aside to be distributed amongst registered local artists. These funds are received by PPNZ from licensees such as broadcasters, public performance venues and music service providers.
Because your record company owns the copyright to your sound recordings i.e the master tapes, it controls the broadcasting and public performance rights and is entitled to a 50% share of any royalties payable.
